The term Mudpie came to describe an experience in tonal communication which we may have unknowingly experienced when we were small children playing with sand, mud, sticks, rocks, and anything else to create our own little Utopia within the sphere of life. We truly believed in the imaginary world we created. We learned how to accept other beings into our play circles and since our mastery of verbal communication was limited, we tended to express ourselves with actions (articulated gestures) instead of formal language. We all felt that sense of eternal rhythm pulsating through our mind, body, and spirit. We were free (albeit momentarily) from all the restrictions of conservatism, tradition, and the bondage of the adult world. This is an opportunity to rekindle that innocence and liberation you felt as a child and participate in the serendipitous harmony of the whole. We are all musicians, but, more importantly, we are pulsators. The term “musician” has sadly become a term of exclusivity; thus, we use the inclusive word “pulsator” to describe all of life within and around us which has not been created in isolation, but is a gift of universal harmony and balance.

There are 12 tempered tones which function as fixed points of reference; with and between these tones are an infinite array of vibrations (i.e., frequencies) that stimulate a sense of color and animation. All living things are in essence ‘involuntary’ and potentially ‘voluntary’ pulsators. Inanimate objects can be set into motion by these kinetic forces which can cause the actuality or appearance of life. Fingers plucking strings, wind rustling leaves, horses trotting down a cobblestone road, vocal chords expressing emotion, hands tapping drums, on and on and on. We can think of life as being fire itself. Maybe we are all just a bunch of fireballs rocketing through space and time!!

During a Mudpie gathering some might desire to rest in silence and absorb the friendly interplay of that which is around them. Occasionally, the amazing phenomenon of group silence is created by happenstance which gives us all a respite from the journey we are embarking on. This can be analogous to “nap time.” Ingredients needed to make a mudpie Conviction Pulse Articulation M U D P I E u

e Mudpie Library Conviction is knowing that all vibrations (e.g., tones and sounds) and divisions of time are completely and always relative to one another, and that the serendipitous events that occur during a “mudpie gathering” are of the highest sublime order. Articulation is the level of skill in which an individual is able to express one’s deepest thoughts and feelings through the dynamic interplay with others. Pulse is the intrinsic awareness and physical realization of the mind, body, and spirit as a unified force of motion. The Sphere of Influence is that which is sensed beyond one’s own manipulations resulting in a harmonious convergence of being.
